Pokemon Origin HeartGold

Game description
Pokemon Origin HeartGold is a Nintendo DS hack that changes HeartGold's opening, story progression and training systems. Your journey begins in Kanto rather than Johto, and familiar towns become the setting for different encounters, errands and character scenes. It uses HeartGold's DS presentation while building a different route through its world.
The adventure gives your starter choice consequences beyond your first battles. Pikachu, Charmander and Bulbasaur have different early gifts and encounters, and some requests can disappear as the main story advances. Talking to people before leaving an area matters: side activities are woven into the journey, rather than reserved for an endgame checklist.
English v1.0.0-rc8, released on 13 October 2026, builds on Chinese 4.0.3. The adventure is completed; the English translation remains a release candidate with its own fixes and optional difficulty controls.
Storyline
Professor Oak sends you and Blue toward an unusual ambition: trying for the Viridian Gym Leader position. You choose a partner in Pallet Town, travel through Viridian Forest and work toward Brock's Boulder Badge. Early errands and rival encounters establish a different sequence from the original HeartGold introduction.
The wider journey develops through Kanto before opening Johto after the Kanto championship and subsequent story events. Familiar trainers appear in changed roles, and starter-dependent scenes give parts of the route a different emphasis. Expect story requirements as well as badge requirements when deciding where to go next.
Features
- Visible wild encounters: Pokemon can appear on the map, with up to six nearby at once. Repels prevent new visible encounters; leaving and reloading does not preserve those individual spawns.
- Capture chains: the Chain Logger tracks repeated catches of the same species and form. Longer chains affect IV, Hidden Ability and shiny checks. Catching something different breaks the sequence; simply defeating or fleeing does not advance it.
- Training information: press L on the summary screen to inspect IVs and EVs, and Y in battle for additional information. These tools expose details that ordinary HeartGold keeps less accessible.
- EV allocation: the EV Allocator redistributes earned effort values after battle. It rearranges existing training rather than granting a free pool of new stats.
- Additional forms: the mechanics guide documents Mega forms and Armored Mewtwo. Their requirements differ, so use the form-specific instructions rather than assuming every transformation follows one rule.
- English-patch difficulty options: RC7 introduced CAP, SHARE and ITEMS settings. The level cap follows Gym progress, SHARE controls bench experience, and RC8's DEFAULT item setting restores the Chinese hack's trainer-battle item rules.
- Adjustable party experience: SHARE ON gives experience to benched Pokemon. In RC8, switching it off still allows a Pokemon holding Exp. Share to receive experience and EVs. Confirm settings and save to retain your choices.
- Conditional side quests: gifts and requests can depend on your starter or story progress. The early Pallet send-off gifts, for example, must be collected before entering Viridian City.

Versions and language
English v1.0.0-rc8 builds on the completed Chinese 4.0.3 adventure. The translation remains a release candidate, with its own fixes and difficulty options.
Emulator compatibility
The English team tested melonDS. RC8 has not been fully tested on original hardware, and support for other emulators and flashcarts is unconfirmed.
Keep a save backup
Back up your ordinary in-game save before changing versions. The translation preserves the save format, but emulator save states should not be treated as interchangeable between builds.
Known progression issues
The known-issues guide flags an S.S. Anne party sequence that can leave progression stuck, along with other missable events. Check the relevant walkthrough before major story transitions and keep more than one save backup.
Content warning
Contains strong language, sexual themes and innuendo, violence, death and dark humor. Not suitable for children.

Frequently asked questions
Does Origin HeartGold start in Johto?
No. It begins in Pallet Town in Kanto. Johto opens later, after the Kanto championship and additional story events.
Which starters does Origin HeartGold offer?
The opening offers Pikachu, Charmander and Bulbasaur. Your selection changes some gifts and encounters, so a walkthrough for another starter may describe different scenes.
Are the level cap and experience switches part of Chinese 4.0.3?
No. Those optional controls were introduced by the English patch in RC7. RC8 refines them, including restoring the default battle-item rules and allowing held Exp. Share to work when bench sharing is off.
Does an English release candidate mean the game has no remaining bugs?
No. RC8 fixes specific issues, but the project still documents progression problems and untested cases. Read the known-issues guide and retain save backups, particularly before changing patch versions.
